Educator Well Being Series
Course Series
1) The Masloch Burnout Inventory Framework
Deep-dive into Dr. Christina Maslach’s three dimensions of job burnout: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment. Study how these dimensions manifest specifically within K-12 school cultures.
2) Systemic Wellness vs. Surface Level Wellness
Research the organizational psychology literature comparing individual-focused wellness initiatives (e.g., yoga, mindfulness apps, staff-room snacks) with system-focused structural adjustments (e.g., reducing administrative burdens, scheduling flexibility, clear work-hour boundaries).
3) Psychological Safety in the Workplace
Explore Dr. Amy Edmondson’s research on psychological safety within teams. Apply this to school buildings: how a teacher’s belief that they will not be punished or humiliated for making mistakes or speaking up affects their mental health, vulnerability, and long-term retention.
4) Occupational Stress and Somatic Symptom Expression
Investigate the physical and physiological expressions of chronic workplace stress in educators (e.g., sleep disturbances, immune system suppression, cardiovascular risks) to build a compelling, health-centered argument for district-funded wellness packages.
